Everyday we’re effected by many exterior forces. Some of them are routine everyday things. Some of them are slightly off the beaten path and change you. Most of this lies within. How open to change are we?
Being an avid reader of Daring Fireball by John Gruber, I couldn’t help but be inspired by recent posts regarding the passing of David Foster Wallace.
Being the creative person that I am, I felt that even though my writing may fall flat on it’s face, I want to try. I have thoughts, ideas, observations, and passions like most people. However, if any of what I might have to say offers any incite or creates new questions, than I feel it’s more than worth while.
Parallels
I recently reread John’s post regarding going full time with Daring Fireball. What I found interesting were the parallels between this site and John’s, aside from Mac nerdery.
When I decided I would like to give writing a go, I referenced a quote by Stanley Kubrick.
“If you can talk brilliantly about a problem, it can create the consoling illusion that it has been mastered.”
When John wrote about focusing on Daring Fireball full time, he referenced that exact quote as an inspiration for moving forward. From there, he wrote about being inspired by Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford. At the end of that speech, Steve Jobs references the last issue of the Whole Earth Catalog:
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
You can see where I’m going with this. However, my main intention of bringing this to light was discovering some similarities that I had no idea that existed. It’s the little things in life that if you take time to see can change and inspire you. For me, realizing a couple of parallels between that of a hero of mine is truly inspiring.
